In the new park of 16Hoven, in the northen part of Rotterdam, the municipality asked for the design of two new pedestrian bridges. Since the park is connected to a newly built, quiet residential area, the brief stipulated an intimate and romantic design, with simple but honest use of materials of a high quality.

Our proposed design was a summer and winter variation of the same starting point: a tapered concrete deck supported by a fake rock, with a 20 m long seamless weathering steel sheet as balustrade. The summer version consists of a non-repetitive leaf pattern, cut from a massive 3 cm thick steel sheet. At first glance, the winter version resembles a forest of branches, but it is actually a hand-traced microscopic image of a leaf.
